The Last Grouper

2020-04-15T19:34:11-04:00February 1st, 2014|

Wow! I can’t believe it’s already February! The weather lately has been very mild except for the day we have a front pass through and get some wind and rain. Fished the Mike Kinne group on Dec 31st and we had a nice catch of red and black grouper and also mutton snapper. This was the last day it was legal to keep grouper until May 1st. We only kept this one black grouper for the group dinner that night.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

2020-04-15T19:34:21-04:00December 22nd, 2013|

I wish everyone a great Holiday!

Fishing is picking up here around Key West and the few cold fronts we have had are starting to move the migratory fish into our waters.

Below are the Whittman’s from Indianapolis with a few of the fish we caught.

Challenge the wind…..or not!

2020-04-15T19:35:25-04:00December 7th, 2013|

Fished a nice group of guys down from the frozen north who went out despite very windy conditions. They wanted to fish the reef but after an hour the boat looked like a scene from the Exorcist! So how to save the day? Go sharking! We ran in and set up off the edge of a flat and caught some lemon sharks and everyone came back to the dock healthy and happy.

Sharks are a very under rated gamefish-black tip sharks jump as well as any tarpon or sailfish and all the shark species pull hard. After the fight one sharp pull […]

Thanksgiving

2020-04-15T19:35:50-04:00November 28th, 2013|

i have to start by saying I’m not thankful for the windy conditions we’ve been dealing with the last 6 weeks.

Other than that I’m very thankful for my family and friends old and new. I’m also thankful for my clients that make it possible to make a living here in paradise!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Pictured below is Ott and his wife Julie with their friends Nick and Ann. we had a break in the wind and ran up into the Gulf for a nice catch of grouper and snapper.

Rumbling and Grumbling

2020-04-15T19:35:56-04:00November 6th, 2013|

So in the last 3 weeks we’ve had about 2 nice days of weather and I had to move my charter around to get in one of the good weather days. On one the nicer of the nasty weather days I took out my client even though it was pretty rough. He had his wife and in-laws with him and his mother-in-law didn’t last long before she was projectile vomiting over the side-way to make a good impression Bruce!

More Rogue River……..

Camera Boat Duty

2020-04-15T19:36:08-04:00October 29th, 2013|

Received a call from my good friend George Poveromo who asked if I would be interested in running my Conch 27 up to Marathon to be the camera boat while he filmed an episode of his TV show “George Poveromo’s World of Saltwater Fishing”. George was featuring outstanding Marathon guide Capt. Jimmy Gagliardini for a 2014 season show. George and I will be filming an episode in early December here in Key West.

George and Jimmy are pictured working hard.

Rogue River Steelhead

2020-04-15T19:36:29-04:00October 21st, 2013|

Recently returned from fishing the Rogue River near Grants Pass, Oregon with my buddies Bobito, Sun Hippie and Roger. The first day we did well on the steelhead but it slowed down the second day, although Bobito and I did manage a steelhead and cutthroat trout each. On this trip the steelhead were from 19″-24″.

Our poor friend Sun Hippie flailed away making the Rogue a frothy mess and couldn’t catch his butt with both hands. In the race for “Worst Angler Ever” he is inching away from my other friend Jon. Roger, who had never fished for steelhead before and was […]

Fished the flats with Ewan and Sarah from Scotland. Ewan was fortunate enough to catch his first permit. We also caught barracuda and sharks. Beautiful day to be on the water!

Timeout

2020-04-15T19:36:55-04:00September 28th, 2013|

Put the Conch 27 in a “timeout” to refurbish the boat-all new bolsters and cushions as well as new non-skid on the deck and gunnels. Had fiberglass guru Greg Lynch working on the Conch and he did an outstanding job!

On the fishing front the bait is starting to show up and when we get a few cold fronts things will really get good offshore.

The flats have been good with bonefish, permit, barracuda, sharks and jacks.

Maddy’s Excellent Adventure

2020-04-15T19:38:24-04:00August 25th, 2013|

When I arrived at the Sunset Key dock waiting for me was a high energy 7 yr old named Maddy. Maddy had traveled to Key West with aunt Terry Ward who is a freelance writer and contributing editor for Endless Vacation Magazine ( www.terry-ward.com ).

After discussing our fishing options Maddy decided she wanted to catch snappers and was extremely excited when I said we would see some sharks as well.

We ran west from Key West and set up a chum line off the edge of a shallow grass flat. Maddy went to work catching small snappers and it wasn’t long […]
